Exploration Companies
An exploration company sells nothing. It has no product, usually no revenue, and its entire activity consists of spending money to reduce uncertainty about ground it holds rights over. That model is unfamiliar to most readers outside the sector and it explains nearly everything about how such companies behave, which is why the category deserves a page rather than a paragraph.
The mechanics follow from the model. Work is funded by issuing equity, so raising money and spending it are continuous rather than occasional activities. Rights to explore are held as tenements or permits with defined areas, terms and minimum work commitments, and letting one lapse can matter more than any drilling result. Joint ventures and farm-in arrangements let one party earn an interest by funding work, which is how projects advance when the holder cannot fund them alone. Above all sits disclosure: because these companies trade on information rather than production, reporting codes govern what may be claimed, when, and by whom — and the distinction between a result and a resource is a legal one, not a matter of emphasis. It is also true, and worth stating plainly, that the large majority of exploration projects never become mines. That is the base rate the industry operates on, not a comment on any particular project.
The structures, the funding cycle, tenure and its obligations, and the way an explorer's disclosures should be read for what they establish are what the category actually consists of. No individual company or project is evaluated here.
Exploration under Mining & Production covers the fieldwork itself, and Regulation the permitting regime that grants and governs tenure. Mining Companies is the category explorers hope to join, Major Projects tracks assets at this stage, and Investment Incentives the public support sometimes available to them.
