Technology Providers

What gets sold here is rarely hardware. A process licensor sells a route and the right to use it; a consultancy sells judgement and the liability that attaches to signing a study; a software vendor sells a model of an operation; a commercial laboratory sells a number that other people's decisions will rest on. These are knowledge businesses, and understanding how they earn matters because their business models shape which technologies actually reach an operating plant.

Several features recur across the category. Process technology is often licensed rather than sold, with royalties tied to output, which gives a licensor a long interest in a plant's performance and a reason to be conservative about what it will guarantee. Consultancies and engineering firms carry professional liability for the studies they sign, which makes them cautious in ways that occasionally read as obstruction and are usually prudence. Laboratories operate under accreditation regimes because their results feed disclosures that others rely on, and the independence of that testing is structurally important to everyone downstream of it. Software and analytics vendors face the opposite problem: their claims are easy to make and hard to verify, and the industry's scepticism is earned.

Each kind of provider is engaged differently, takes responsibility for different things and declines others, and each has its own route by which a technology travels from a laboratory into a working circuit. Individual firms will not be assessed or compared.
